Applications will be accepted beginning Thursday, July 2, 2026 12:00 AM (Eastern Standard Time).Job DescriptionSalem City Schools is searching for qualified applicants for the position of Substitute Car/Van Driver for the 2026-2027 school year.Position SummaryCar and/or van driver responsible for transportation of pupils to and from school and special events, ensuring safety, compliance with laws, and maintaining vehicle condition.General Definition and Conditions of WorkPerforms intermediate semi‑skilled human support work in transportation of pupils, picking up and dropping off students per schedule, maintaining order and security in the vehicle, obeying all laws and regulations, ensuring the vehicle is in good operating condition, and performing related tasks as required. Work is performed under the supervision of the Coordinator of Transportation and appropriate principals. Light work requiring up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, with occasional exposure to environmental conditions, noise, vibration, and bloodborne pathogens.Essential Functions / Typical TasksDrive car and/or van; pick up and deliver students to/from school.Perform inspection of vehicles; report operating and equipment deficiencies and make the car/van available for scheduled maintenance.Clean car/van inside and out, including but not limited to cleaning a windshield before a trip.Fuel car/van as required.Obey all traffic laws and observe mandatory safety regulations for car/van operations.Transport only authorized students, school personnel, and/or authorized chaperones to special events and field trips.Report all accidents and complete required reports; in the event of an accident or emergency, assure the safe evacuation of children and adult passengers.Review emergency procedures with the Coordinator of Transportation annually or as needed.Record mileage; maintain various records and prepare a variety of reports on activities.Ensure passenger safety; maintain discipline on car/van; make reports as necessary.Work independently or collaboratively with others in a wide variety of circumstances.Establish professional relationships and communicate effectively.Exercise sound judgment in decision making.Demonstrate teamwork, flexibility, and ability to adapt to new ideas and situations.Ensure the safety and well‑being of children by only releasing students into the custody of those authorized to receive them.Follow and ensure mandated child restraint device procedures, ensuring children are properly positioned and restrained.Assure that no child is ever left unsupervised in a car/van.Attend all scheduled staff meetings, team meetings, and training as requested.Perform related tasks as required.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesGeneral knowledge of car/van operation, geography of the City and street locations, safe vehicle operation skills, ability to detect malfunctioning equipment, assistance of children with patience and understanding, establishment and maintenance of effective relationships with school officials, public, associates, and students.Education and ExperienceAny combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.Special RequirementsPossession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
