The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority ( WMATA ) goal of getting rail passengers where they need to go requires an addition to the leadership team structure by adding a Crew Support Supervisor to be based in Alexandria, VA. This role operates daily where safety, leadership and precision drive each day.
As a Crew Support Supervisor, the individual in this role will play a critical part in maintaining the reliability and performance of rail operations. This supervisory position oversees the support of tracking, scheduling, and preventative maintenance of Class 2 rail equipment by ensuring work activities are on time, compliant, and efficient with successful project delivery.
This role will require the individual to have strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to skillfully adapt to interaction across crew segments, with contractors, and operational sectors. Because this role will be entrusted with regular usage of company vehicles, a valid driver¿s license is required and the ability to attain and maintain a Level 4 Roadway Worker Protection certification is required. Being adept at documentation accuracy, regulatory compliance, and efficient equipment deployment and retrieval are essential skill requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- Associate's Degree in Business Administration or certification from an approved technical program in Track, COMM, IT, Power or Plant Management/Engineering, Construction Management, Mechanical, or related field.
- In lieu of an Associate's Degree, a High School Diploma or GED and two years of experience in maintenance, construction and repairs on a Class I railroad or electrified rail transit systems, in addition to the experience stated below, will be considered.
Experience - Three (3) years of experience in maintenance, construction and repairs on a Class I railroad or electrified rail transit systems or supervising support functions such as power or communications in a construction environment.
- Proficient in the use of Personal Computers and software applications, including scheduling software, Microsoft suite, Maximo and PeopleSoft applications.
Certification/Licensure - Valid Driver's License
- Roadway Worker Protection, Level 4 within 1 year and maintained for the duration of time in the job

Job Summary The Crew Support Supervisor facilitates the Crew Support Personnel process and addresses issues that arise with crew support during supported work events. This includes scheduling and supervising Crew Support Personnel (CSP) in support of maintenance, rehabilitation, and capital project delivery activities; the tracking and scheduling of Class 2 Rail Equipment for work activities and preventative maintenance; and coordinating the confirmation, approval, cancellation, resolution, or redirection of requests for crew support from the Project Delivery Office. The incumbent also coordinates with departments within Infrastructure to ensure support for all outages are well coordinated, with a plan to complete work safely, and return to service on time.
Essential Functions - Plans, assigns, coordinates and supervises crew support personnel and activities for maintenance, rehabilitation, and construction projects. Ensures all material and equipment are identified, gathered, and available prior to execution of maintenance work to ensure work crews and contractors have proper support, instruction, and direction when work on WMATA's right of way.
- Ensures safety requirements, WMATA rules, regulations, protection standards, access requirements and operational standards/ conditions that affect the revenue operations are followed while performing maintenance and construction support activities. Ensures assigned staff are properly trained and qualified for the assignments they are given, based on Metro Operating Rules (MOR) and regulations, and Roadway Worker Protection (RWP) qualifications.
- Assigns individuals to the CSP team, confirming availability. Responds to the CSP team's needs during work activities, working to find team member replacements in the event the assigned personnel do not show, and attempts to mitigate any roadway challenges or worksite concerns.
- Verifies assigned staff has valid and current RWP cards prior to being given an assignment on the roadway. Ensures assigned employees are scheduled for RWP retraining or requalification at least 60 days prior to expiration date.
- Maintains records and reports of procurement and usage of materials. Prepares a daily work report identifying their work activities, as well as the assigned CSP. Confirms daily Capital Improvement Project (CIP) timesheets are properly coded, signed and archived. Ensures material control and daily payroll records are accurate and validated for timely employee payments and possible financial audits.
- Coordinates, dispatches, and directs the safe and efficient movement of rail equipment and personnel during shutdown operations when assigned as Oversight support staff on Major outages and weekend RSAs.
- Assists in the coordination of and conflict resolution support for the various work groups/departments attempting to perform work within the shutdown area/location.
Other Functions - Maintains and promotes awareness and accountability with safety policies and procedures while performing job functions. Promotes a positive safety culture and encourages reporting of safety concerns consistent with our Agency Safety Plan, other regulatory requirements within the Safety Management System and just culture principles.
