The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) launched the Supporting, Mobilizing, and Accelerating Research for Tuberculosis Elimination (SMART4TB) in 2022. SMART4TB is a five-year, up to $200 million initiative to identify more effective methods and tools for finding, treating, and preventing tuberculosis (TB) in high TB burden countries. SMART4TB is now managed out of the Bureau for Global Health Security and Diplomacy (GHSD) at the U.S. Department of State. The current funding ends July 31, 2027. This initiative will build research capacity in high TB burden countries by supporting studies that evaluate novel approaches, interventions, and tools to combat TB-including new diagnostic tests, new treatment regimens, and new prevention regimens. Led by Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the current SMART4TB core consortium partners include the University of California, San Francisco, and Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, working in close collaboration with research partners in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
