Our Roanoke office is seeking a staff plumbing/fire protection designer with 10+ years with experience in the design of plumbing and fire protection systems for buildings. The applicant should demonstrate proficiency in AutoCAD and/or REVIT (REVIT preferred), Microsoft Office, and an understanding of national standard plumbing codes, building codes and NFPA codes related to plumbing and fire protection system design. The designer will work directly with senior staff to develop plans and specifications for construction of plumbing and fire protection systems.

This position requires the engineer/designer to perform all aspects of engineering as it relates to individually assigned projects.

Responsibilities

  • Meet with architects and other team members to determine appropriate plumbing and fire protection systems, location, and preliminary cost estimates.
  • Perform fieldwork to determine design direction, including making educated decisions on system designs and upgrades; experience with system layout, calculation, and sizing of piping and equipment.
  • Coordinate systems with architects, clients, and other engineering disciplines during design and production drawings.
  • Perform plumbing system and fire protection system design calculations.
  • Prepare contract documents using the latest version of AutoCAD and/or Revit to design and provide concepts for schematic design packages. HydraCad/HydraCALC is a plus.
  • Develop technical construction specifications to support project design and drawings.
  • Assist in plumbing and fire protection construction administration, including shop drawing review, site visits, cost proposal evaluations, and responding to questions from the field.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable plumbing and building codes and NFPA standards.
  • Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to multi-task across multiple projects in different phases.
  • Maintain excellent client interface capabilities and organizational skills to deliver quality service while managing scope.
  • Show enthusiasm and commitment to continued education and development of new skills.
  • Possess an Associates Degree in a related engineering/science discipline (mechanical engineering fundamentals); a Graduate degree and/or registered Professional Engineer is a plus.
  • ASPE CPDT/CPD certification preferred or ability to obtain within one year of employment.
  • LEED certifications are a plus.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in designing plumbing and fire protection systems for buildings.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or REVIT (REVIT preferred), Microsoft Office.
  • Understanding of national standard plumbing codes, building codes, and NFPA codes related to plumbing and fire protection.
  • Strong collaboration, communication, and coordination skills.
  • Associates Degree in a related engineering/science discipline; professional licensure or graduate degree is a plus.
  • ASPE CPDT/CPD certification preferred or ability to obtain within one year of employment; LEED certification is a plus.
