Supervise staff in order to promote, champion and partner with all levels of management to instill a world class safety culture. To instill safety prevention concepts using leadership, knowledge, skills and abilities for the advocacy of a safe and healthy work environment and the protection of all VDOT assets. How you will contribute:

  • Accidents and Incidents: Conduct trend analysis on accident, incidents and injuries, and illness data to develop quarterly safety reports for the District and Residency Managers. Develop and implement an injury prevention program based on top 3 injury categories. Completion of any Special Projects and Assignments as required. Participate in District and Residency Safety Committee meetings. Participate in Pre-Construction meetings Districtwide.

  • Emergency Events: Respond to emergency call-outs after hours and requests to investigate accidents involving VDOT or contractor equipment and employees.
  • Investigations: Investigate personal injuries and workplace fatalities for causal factors and prevention methods to prevent future occurrences. Investigate close call situations that have a possibilities for serious injury or death. Respond to emergency call outs after hours as requested to investigate accidents invovling VDOT and Contractor equipment and employees. Monitor and audit work zones for compliance and investigate work zone accidents with fatalities, serious personal injuries and equipment damages in compliance with the Virgina Work Area Protection Manual.
  • Investigations: Work with assigned staff to investigate personal injuries and workplace fatalities for causal factors and prevention methods to prevent future occurrences. Investigate close call situations that have a possibilities for serious injury or death. Develop and evaluate specifications for personal protective equipment, safety equipment, regulations, standards and rules. Provide vital and mandatory training programs to all employees for safety,emergency preparedness and accident prevention. Perform breath alcohol testing and drug collection testing as required by Federal Motor Carrier Regulations.
  • Safety Program Administration: Perform tasks in accordance with assigned Roles and Core Responsibilities. Demonstrate a commitment to being a trustworthy steward of assigned resources. Acts with integrity and truthfulness in performance of duties. Abides by all applicable laws, regulations and policies. Work with assigned staff to provide vital and mandatory training programs to all employees for safety,emergency preparedness and accident prevention.   • Safety Standards: Maintains comprehensive knowledge, skills and abilities in current and evolving Federal, State, and local safety agency regulations, building, fire and electrical codes, NFPA, MUTCD, ISEA, ANSI, ASTM standards, VOSH and WAPM, Road and Bridge Standards and Specifications, accident investigation and accident reconstruction. Provide customer service to the internal and external customers of the agency by serving as liaison between Central Office and all levels of VDOT on safety and health issues. Provides leadership to assigned staff and less experienced compliance managers, may act as lead compliance manager on small to medium size projects, investigations, monitoring schedules and resolving problems.
  • Safety Standards: Maintains comprehensive knowledge, skills and abilities in current and evolving Federal, State, and local safety agency regulations, building, fire and electrical codes, NFPA, MUTCD, ISEA, ANSI, ASTM standards, VOSH and WAPM, Road and Bridge Standards and Specifications, accident investigation and accident reconstruction. Provide customer service to the internal and external customers of the agency by serving as liaison between Central Office and all levels of VDOT on safety and health issues. Provides leadership to less experienced complaince managers, may act as lead complaince manager on small to medium size projects, investigations, monitoring schedules and resolving problems.

  • Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ability to obtain required certifications for workforce safety and health program delivery.
  • Experience applying industrial and motor vehicle accident investigation techniques.
  • Experience gathering and analyzing data and preparing technical reports.
  • Experience interpreting and applying codes, laws, standards, policies and procedures related to safety.
  • Experience with occupational safety and health standards, industrial hygiene fundamentals, and safety equipment.
  • Skill in technical writing and public speaking.
  • Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include web-based systems.
  • Valid driver's license.

  • Additional Considerations:
  • A combination of training, experience, or education in Health, Occupational Safety or related field desired.
  • Advanced Crash Investigation and Reconstruction.
  • Certified Instructor in First Aid and CPR - Defibrillation.
  • Defensive Driving Certification, or Instructor or Defensive Driving Professional Truck Driver.
  • Experience gathering and analyzing data and preparing technical reports.
  • Experience with occupational safety and health standards, industrial hygiene fundamentals, and safety equipment. Experience applying industrial and motor vehicle accident investigation techniques.
  • FEM IS 100, IS 200, IS 700, IS 800.
  • Fundamentals of Crash Investigation and Reconstruction.
  • VDOT flagging certification.
