Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Photography. Position and Qualifications

The Studio Art program at Hollins educates and empowers students in the creative process through a breadth of experience in multiple media areas and a depth of experience in the media of their choice. Art Department faculty are dedicated to teaching, creative work, and experiential learning that further Hollins Universitys commitment to access and excellence for all. The university aims to hire an artist-educator with a broad technical background in both film and digital photography. The successful candidate must also be committed to working in an undergraduate, student-centered, liberal arts educational environment.

An M.F.A. in Studio Art or Photography is required. Candidates with 1-2 years of college level (or equivalent) teaching experience of film and digital photography are preferred, and experience running/maintaining a photographic darkroom and digital lab is also preferred. The photography facilities at Hollins include a low toxicity analog darkroom, an experimental darkroom for alternative processes, and a digital photography lab, and the artist in this position will be responsible for maintaining all equipment and materials. Additionally, candidates should have an active artistic practice that demonstrates a commitment to the broad use and interpretation of contemporary photography and related disciplines.

The position carries a teaching load of three courses during the fall 2025 term. Courses to be covered include Introduction to Film Photography, Advanced Photography, and Experimental Photography. The selected candidate will also be responsible for advising Studio Art senior photography projects. Additionally, the successful candidate for this position will have the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues in Art History and in the Eleanor D. Wilson Museum, all of whom are housed in the Richard Wetherill Visual Arts Center at Hollins.
