Mental Health Support Services (MHSS) is the provider of mental health, developmental disabilities, and substance use disorder services for children and adults in Chesterfield County. We are currently seeking a Residential Counselor to provide direct assistance, support, supportive counseling, and skills training to individuals with intellectual disabilities in a residential facility. Our Residential Counselors are dedicated and compassionate and work in group homes, supported living, in-home, homes of families, and other settings.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a human services field such as psychology, sociology, rehabilitation counseling, or a related field; one year of experience in working with individuals with intellectual disabilities; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Three years of related experience preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working knowledge of the nature of intellectual disabilities and the role of residential support services. Ability to supervise and provide direct care to consumers in a residential setting; to develop and implement individualized service plans; to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to operate a personal computer and related software and other standard office equipment; to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers. Bilingual Spanish skills preferred. Experience using an electronic health record preferred.

Additional Requirements

Current valid drivers license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the preceding twenty-four months, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date.

Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check, and education/degree verification required.

This position is considered Safety Sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Duties include but are not limited to:

1. Provides supports and teaching to adults with intellectual disabilities, autism, some with co-occurring mental illness and/or physical disabilities; plans, organizes and leads individual and group programs and activities including counseling, leisure, recreation and social.
2. Monitors maintenance of consumer files to ensure compliance with agency, state and federal requirements.
3. Implements health and safety plans and policies to ensure a safe and healthy environment for residents and staff.
4. Provides direct supervision and training in skill acquisition and community integration activities for consumers with developmental disabilities in a residential setting or in the community.
5. Prepares and maintains casework documentation as required in the delivery of services (e.g. case histories, assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, correspondence) utilizing an electronic health record.
6. Develops, implements and monitors implementation of individualized service plans for individuals with intellectual disabilities participating in a residential program.
7. Provides direct assistance and care to individuals; provides supports with all activities of daily living (ADL), including grocery shopping, paying bills, cooking, community integration and inclusion, medical appointments, medication administration, and all areas of health and safety.
8. Implements, monitors, and documents individual service delivery; prepares and maintains casework and related documentation using an electronic health record (e.g. Medicaid Waiver documentation, progress notes) as required in the delivery of services.
9. Performs other work as required.
